Kuraray PVA Gel

Kuraray PVA Gel

Subsequent to more than a decade of research and development by the KURARAY company, Kuraray PVA gel has remained a highly efficient biological wastewater treatment process. PVA (Polyvinyl alcohol) Gel is a porous hydrogel best suited for the immobilisation of microorganisms that are useful in degrading pollutants in the environment.

Copolymer gel based on Kuraray PVA gel is a material with high properties used in water treatment. Its most recognized benefits include very high resilience to chemicals and general strength and hardness. The main use of PVA gel is in MBRs and other filters serving as media for biological processes, with an ability to facilitate fouling and cleaning of wastewater. This arrangement provides greater surface area, enhancing microbial action and efficiency in pollutant removal, making it suitable for both industrial and municipal wastewater treatment.

Additionally, customers can also source Kuraray PVA gel India online through authorized channels, ensuring convenient and reliable delivery for all water treatment applications.

Jay Water is a trusted Kuraray PVA gel supplier in India, offering genuine products with assured quality and timely delivery across industries.

Kuraray PVA Gel
  • Translucent or Opaque: PVA gel typically appears as either translucent or opaque.
  • Color: It ranges from clear to milky white, depending on its formulation.
  • Consistency: The gel has a jelly-like consistency.
  • Form: Often supplied in small beads or granules.
  • Hydration: Beads or granules swell when hydrated.
  • Structure: Creates a uniform, porous structure when hydrated.
  • Texture: Smooth and gelatinous, ensuring efficient handling and integration into water treatment systems.

Characteristics of PVA Gel

Bio-Water PVA-Gel is a high-efficiency municipal wastewater treatment Bio-Carrier especially for BOD Load wastewaters like Leachate, dairy wastewater, meat slaughtering and processing wastewaters, pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals and others.

PVA-Gel Bio-Carrier is a 4mm Diameter Polyvinyl Alcohol Hydrogel bead. It can contain only the necessary microorganisms in the bead matrix (porosity of about 20 μm), which is solely responsible for the breakdown of contaminants in Nitrification & Denitrification..

PVA-Gel has an estimated 6000m²/m³ surface area and the consumers use on average 25kg BOD/m³ PVA-Gel/Day, which makes it possible to treat 2-5 times the BOD Load in your existing facility and only minor adaptations of the plant and process..

Microbial Capacity

These PVA gel beads can capture up to 1 billion microorganisms and therefore improve the biological treatment processes.

Water Content

Small latex content due to the presence of much more interconnected porosity, which conducts oxygen and nutrients well.

Durability & Efficiency

Polymerised PVA gel is an insoluble and nonbiodegradable water-swellable gel & Up to 5 times improvement in treatment efficiency over conventionally activated sludge can be achieved.

Treatment Of BOD Removal

A current sewage treatment plant is examined, which has a 250 m3 activated sludge tank and 45 m3 for a clarifier. The Initial design shows that the plant is expected to treat 150 m3/d with BODs of 1000 mg/L in influent water. However, the plant is now in need of an upgrade to deal with a flow of 300 m3/d ( with the same BOD) for which three design options are illustrated in the slide. Generally, a conventional activated sludge system would need roughly double the present tank holding capacity to be able to deal with the new loading.

Treatment for Nitrogen Removal

For an influent wastewater flow of 300 m³/day with a total nitrogen (T-N) concentration of 60 mg/L, the nitrogen removal process involves two main reactions:

  1. Nitrification Reaction (Aerobic):
    • Ammonia nitrogen is converted to nitrite and then to nitrate.
    • This process requires sufficient dissolved oxygen and minimal interference from organic carbon.
  2. Denitrification Reaction (Anoxic):
    • Nitrate is converted to nitrite and then to nitrogen gas.
    • This process requires sufficient organic carbon and minimal interference from dissolved oxygen.

FAQs

How can PVA gel reduce wastewater treatment costs through excess sludge reduction?

PVA excess sludge yield rate = 0.10 g SS/g COD removed vs. 0.5 g SS/g COD for conventional activated sludge (80% reduction).  Combined with autolysis treatment and operational simplicity (less aeration energy needed), customers often see 40-70% lower operating costs within 2-3 years, offsetting higher initial biocarrier investment.

What industries benefit most from PVA gel biocarrier technology?

PVA gel excels in high-BOD industries: dairy (2,000-5,000 mg BOD/L), meat processing, pharmaceutical wastewater, and leachate treatment. Its ability to handle 25 kg BOD/m³/day makes it ideal for seasonal agricultural waste and aquaculture. Municipal treatment plants upgrade existing systems with PVA retrofit tanks. Food & beverage facilities see the fastest ROI due to consistent high-BOD loads and sludge-reduction savings.

Is Kuraray PVA Gel resistant to harsh chemicals and temperature fluctuations?

Yes, it has excellent chemical resistance to acids, alkalis, and organic solvents and retains its properties at elevated temperatures, making it durable for industrial wastewater environments.

Can Kuraray PVA Gel be integrated into existing treatment plants?

Yes, it’s designed for easy integration into membrane bioreactors (MBRs) and conventional activated sludge systems with minimal plant modification, often leading to compact designs and space savings.

What environmental benefits does Kuraray PVA Gel offer?

It reduces the need for chemical additives in wastewater treatment, lowers secondary pollution risks, is non-biodegradable but water-swellable for long-term use, and supports sustainable water management practices.
